Tom Eltang: Smooth Phelonius Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-299-1440
When discussing Tom Eltang's portfolio, his signature Poker and Arne Jacobsen designs immediately come to mind. The Phelonius is yet another of his signature shapes, but it's considerably more scarce and less recognized, making this particular example a rare and welcome addition. At its core, the Phelonius is a specific rendition of the classic bent Dublin distinguished by Eltang's artful use of ridgelines through the stummel and stem. The bowl also features a distinctive lip the fore, urging the composition forward and further differentiating it from the standard Dublin variant. Merging stem and stummel, a single ridgeline traverses the bowl's sides before defining the half-saddle stem's upward-flicking shoulder. Such masterful shaping continues the shank's lines through the stem, including it into the entire composition rather than a mere practical extension. Like all of Eltang's stems, though, it features a hand-cut button of preeminent comfort, with a funneled and polished slot. Lastly, the stummel bears Eltang's recognizable contrast stain, highlighting tendrils of flame grain that camouflage the Phelonius' flanking ridgelines.
