Tom Eltang: Rusticated Arne Jacobsen Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-299-1444

Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect and designer throughout the mid-1900s, most renowned for his contribution to the school of architectural Functionalism and his innovative furniture designs. Jacobsen was also often seen smoking a pipe — usually a slender straight Dublin, not unlike the Eltang piece we see here. Displaying a tall bowl, deep chamber, featherweight stature, and comfortable hand-cut stem, this signature shape from Eltang is a worthy homage to the Danish designer and does well to exemplify both Eltang's and Jacobsen's functional approach to design. Like Jacobsen, Eltang has always been noted for his sense of proportion, a design characteristic that he considers of the utmost importance. He's proportioned this pipe beautifully, both in physical and visual weight, giving the bowl just enough prominence to make it stand out but without disrupting its harmony with the streamlined, oval shank and tapered stem. It's all wrapped up in Eltang's signature rustication with the rim left smooth for handsome contrast.
