Tom Eltang: Sandblasted Bent Egg with Brass Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-299-1478
Tom Eltang is one of Denmark's most well-respected artisans, his style often typified by works that lean heavily on the Danish Functionalist aesthetic, prioritizing clean lines and functionality above any extra ostentations. This bent Egg is an excellent example of how pipes of the Functionalist style can be subtly and tastefully accented, maintaining sophisticated lines and benefitting from an understated bit of flair. Of course, it helps that this pipe is a great example of the style as a whole, the silhouette possessed of a fluid, arcing curvature from stem to rim. The transition is wide, with some subtle definition around the edges, and it gives way to a curling shank that tapers as it reaches toward the junction. A band of brass highlights this junction, and it pairs the shank to a similarly tapering stem of demurely arced black vulcanite, the combination poised for comfortable smoking and nicely balancing the presence of the bowl. Additionally, the shank and stem contribute to a consistent undercurve that visually lifts the bowl while keeping the heel looking subdued. The bowl itself cants forward from atop this sweeping heel, growing tall walls that bow out to a mid-set waistline and lend it a comfortable, plump presence in hand. Dynamic and agile in profile, the graceful contours of this piece are finished in a crisp, inky sandblast that showcases rippling growth rings cascading down the bowl. A smooth rim provides some handsome contrast alongside the brass junction band, creating a thoroughly engaging aesthetic while remaining subtle and sophisticated.
