Tom Eltang: Smooth Tulip Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-299-1502
Tom Eltang's passion for pipe making began at 11, and at just age 16, he apprenticed under Anne Julie, marking the beginning of his pipe-making career. After working with Julie for three years, he moved on to the Pipe Dan workshop and later to Stanwell. Eltang set out on his own in 1980 and has crafted pipes under his name ever since. Known for his expertise in pipe shaping and contrast stains, Eltang has inspired countless young pipemakers worldwide and continues to be a respected figure in the craft.
The Tulip shape is a beautifully understated expression of Danish design, blending smooth curves with a quiet sense of motion. Every aspect of the design contributes to its aerodynamic presence, defined by sleek lines and a refined sense of balance. This particular Tulip features an oval shank paired with a long, gently tapered vulcanite stem, creating a clean, unbroken line that harmonizes with the rest of the form. Like the Horn, this form carries a soft, continuous line from bowl to stem. The forward-leaning bowl lends the pipe a feeling of momentum, while the arched, elongated shank extends the silhouette and enhances the overall elegance of the composition. When viewed in profile, a subtle S-curve introduces a soft rhythm that moves gracefully through the piece. Finished in a mahogany stain, the stummel features beautifully defined flame grain wrapping the bowl, while whorls of birdseye grace the rim.
