Tom Eltang: Sandblasted Asymmetrical Rhodesian Tobacco Pipe

Tom Eltang's passion for pipe making began at 11, and at just age 16, he apprenticed under Anne Julie, marking the beginning of his pipe-making career. After working with Julie for three years, he moved on to the Pipe Dan workshop and later to Stanwell. Eltang set out on his own in 1980, and has crafted pipes under his name ever since. Known for his expertise in pipe shaping and contrast stains, Eltang has inspired countless young pipemakers worldwide and continues to be a respected figure in the craft. This Rhodesian by Tom Eltang is a masterful blend of softness and structure, defined by its harmonious curves and crisp ridgeline. Instead of the typical beadlines, Eltang employs a crisp ridgeline to separate the lower bowl's flare from the inward taper of the rim. The rim of this pipe retains a captivating fluidity, with the flanks displaying a subtle asymmetry that transforms the demarcating ridgeline into a sinuous, flowing curve. This intricate detail isn't immediately apparent when viewing this pipe from above, resulting in a profile that strikes as both playful and harmoniously cohesive. Eltang's interpretation of the Rhodesian diverges from the more traditional straight flare and taper, maintaining an unhurried curve that extends from the lower bowl's flare through to the skewed taper of the rim. This organic shape fits comfortably in the hand, and along with the aft's well-bent curvature, creates an effortless posture while smoking.
