Erik Stokkebye 4th Generation: Pipe of the Year 2019 Smooth (44)
Product Number: 002-787-0222
In a limited edition of 100 pipes, Erik Stokkebye's 4th Generation presents the fifth release of its pipe of the year series, the Årspiben 2019. Årspiben is Danish for "pipe of the year," and is pronounced "orse peeben," or something close to that, but we call it the pipe of the year because we don't speak Danish. When I try, for example, it comes out "horkpipben," and I dare not ask what that may mean in Danish. Semantics aside, this smooth bent Billiard, made for 4th Generation by Peder Jeppesen of Neerup pipes, is a reproduction of a shape that was smoked by Erik's father, Peter Stokkebye, in the 1970s. This piece displays Jeppesen's wonderful contrast stain for full appreciation of the grain, and there's a bit of texture contrast as well, with partial plateau on the rim. For even more visual appeal, look to the wide sterling silver band at the end of the shank. It features a hammered effect on its surface, with raised lettering for "4th Generation" on the top and "2019 on the underside. The graceful taper of the stem-and-shank combination urges the eye to the bowl, where a pronounced heel places the visual weight well forward. It's a classic Danish shape celebrating the Stokkebye family's long tradition in the pipe community while maintaining a modern appeal.- Chuck Stanion
