Falcon: Twisted Stem Black Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-866-0030

Produced in the U.K. since the early '60s, the Falcon pipe was originally conceptualized in 1936 by American engineer Kenly Bugg of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Kenly was a lifelong pipe smoker, and he envisioned creating a pipe that could provide a cool and dry smoking experience when smoked for prolonged periods. Defined by a removable briar bowl and aluminum shank arrangement, it was a revolutionary and innovative design that focused on utility, providing a pipe with a simplified construction and fully customizable features. Due to their simple configuration and use of readily available components, Falcon pipes are accessibly priced and offer an affordable way to expand a rotation with practical, versatile, and durable, workhorse pipes. They've become an iconic staple within the pipe-smoking community, having been enjoyed for generations by a number of iconic personalities — most notably Sir Roger Moore.

As mentioned, the Falcon pipe consists of two elements: a removable bowl and an aluminum shank fitted with a stem. Offered here is the shank-and-stem component. Fashioned from durable, lightweight metal, the fuselage features a threaded, cup-like section called the "humidome" at the end into which screws the Falcon's bowl — the airway drilled directly at the bottom of the chamber much like a traditional Calabash. The humidome collects any moisture that may develop while smoking, and thanks to the bowl's threaded attachment, it can be disconnected to remove excess moisture, even when still hot. Falcon also offers proprietary Dry Rings — pipe cleaner-like swabs that rest in the humidome while smoking and assist in catching unwanted condensation. The pipe's unique construction also allows for the pairing of any Falcon shank-and-stem combination with any Falcon bowl, resulting in a durable pipe that can be customized for any situation.

Note: While our other pipes are photographed individually, these Falcon components are not, so please expect a reasonable level of minor cosmetic variation between the example we've photographed and the specific item you receive. Also, the final picture presents examples of fully assembled Falcon pipes; however, each component is sold separately, and not all are included with this specific product listing.

When I stumbled upon Falcon pipes a few months ago, I was colored surprised at how little attention they seemed to get in the pipe community.

The Falcon system appealed to me as it would enable me to bring just one pipe stem and multiple bowls on extended trips without having to worry about g
iving my briars time to recover after a smoke. After doing exactly this several times over the past 6 months, I can report that this works GREAT. I have even been able to find some meerschaum bowls that take the experience up another level too!

Maybe the one knock I can have is the filters might be less economical to stock up on, and due to the design you pretty much need to use a filter. Also cleaning the reservoir underneath is an additional task for good maintenance, but a touch of rubbing alcohol makes this easy.

Overall, great design and pipe for how I use them! The chrome finish is durable and by far the best version. The other finishes look good in photos but appear a little cheap in person.

I had been curious about these pipes for a long time. I remember when almost every pipe smoker in London, and throughoutAll of the UK, had these in the lmid 1970s and through the 1980s. After 45 years of pipe smoking I bought one together with a Dover smooth bowl. The workmanship is very nice, and you either like the look of it, or not. I found this to be one of the worst pipe purchases I ever made. dealing with the condensation in the bowl collector is one thing, but finding that it leakedat the bowl threads was another. I gave it a few weeks, but in the end, I tossed it....Read More
