If I were asked to sum up Alex Florov's work in one statement, it would be that he is a man who takes a lot of seemingly completely mad ideas and turns them into beautiful pipes. Who else would have made a "Snail Climbing Mount Fuji"? Who else would have made this? I've seen a lot of Whale shapes in my time, but not like this one. And as out there as it is, its out-there-ness is handily eclipsed by the excellence of its execution. The interplay of lines and form here is about as complex as any I've ever seen, yet nothing is lost of the leaping arc of the underlying gesture, and everywhere you look, the presentation of the briar's is grain phenomenally controlled and just gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
