Alex Florov: Smooth Falling Leaf Freehand (Slonim)

Product Number: 002-354-0175

From the time that Alex Florov began to appear on our site, into mid-2010, I had the pleasure of describing every one of his briars. But that pleasure was never a leisurely one: Florov's progress as a carver seemed faster than a young Mozart in his music, and his creative approaches progressed with an equal acceleration. It started with (very) well done, almost "according to Hoyle" takes on Danish classical shapes, then he put the metaphorical hammer down with advanced explorations in the Art Nouveau aesthetic. Within less than a year he was regularly employing facets and impossible angles that only a sculptor could attempt — and Alex didn't just attempt — he crushed it. Advance another year and his pierced flowers left us all breathless, and his legendary Egyptian set did the impossible; left me speechless. Even after an additional four years of progress, one aspect to Alex Florov's craft has remained immutable: the Slonim Grade represents the pinnacle of his art. Yes, this is a Slonim.

With every fluttering turn in the hand, and from any possible vantage, this Slonim Falling leaf is a study in quiet, almost hypnotic fascination. Leaves stacked upon leaves, subtle cupping and central veins mirrored with the convexity of the rim and heel - for a treat, move from picture to picture and observe how the very spirit of this masterwork morphs with each new perspective. Perhaps the most amazing, at least to my way of thinking, is how Florov was able to create all of these differing contexts, while maintaining such a daunting level of ridge/plane continuity. Then again, I shouldn't be amazed. after all, this is Alex.
