Alex Florov: Smooth Pierced Fish with Bamboo and Karelian Birch (Slonim) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-354-0185
Though at first glance it appears merely a prop or decoration to Alex's underlying "Leaping Fish" shape, the (interrupted) five knuckle stretch of bamboo that 'spears' this shape in place actually continues on after the stummel in a single knuckled stub that ends in a Karelian (Masur) Birch cap. That cap, once removed, reveals that the piece, in addition to being a sturdy and precisely balanced sitter, is in fact a working Cavalier.
Alex has taken the Fish shape and here oriented the grain so that it shares qualities with the Blowfish, via cross-cut grain along the panelled ridge at the vertical edges (top, bottom, fore, and aft). Another dominant feature of this design is asymmetrical shaping, so that while the birdseye-covered left cheek is convex, the right is concave, also showing birdseye but with plateau leading along from the top edge and into the lashing curve of the tail.
