Alex Florov: Smooth Freehand Blowfish (Slonim)
Product Number: 002-354-0190
If Umberto Boccioni's Unique Forms of Continuity in Space and the last Blowfish we saw from Hiroyuki Tokutomi had a baby, what are the odds it would look like this? Very high, I think — assuming we're talking about a best case scenario.
That combination may not be what actually inspired Alex Florov here, but it paints an interesting picture well-suited to this interesting design: a Blowfish of balanced asymmetry mixed in with rippling motion and a wild-at-a-glance, but ultimately very controlled sense of dynamism. By that I mean the swing of curves and twists of form are quite dramatic, but the paths they follow remain smooth and Alex never lets the shape throw itself out of balance; think of a gymnast performing some seemingly impossible (or at least highly improbable) acrobatics, then landing on his feet without so much as a teeter.
As a shape, it's very impressive, as a pipe it is even more so, considering that a pipe has those basic requirements of also working around a functional purpose, entailing a chamber and connecting draft-hole, and stem (and the base of the stem as you can see joins in on the fun of the form, too). Add to all that the way Alex pulled it off while still producing beautiful displays of grain and a deft placement of plateau, and the sum is something else.
Specifically, it is a "Slonim."
