Alex Florov: Smooth Snail Climbing Mount Fuji (Slonim)
Product Number: 002-354-0200
When Alex presented us with a rendition of this special signature some years back, the "snail" took a more direct approach to its journey around the Volcano. Alex also rendered the form quite a bit taller as well, though with the same purposeful degree of forward cant. Said forward geometry seems to be more subtle here, given the shape's low-sitting visual weight, allowing Alex to play with the briar's natural canvas to showcase some stunning flame in a very dynamic way (as is often the case with the carver). This brings me back to the snail: her journey is implied through the use of a winding, tapered ridge that begins apart from the bowl itself, before wrapping its way around the right flank to become one with the base. Alex finished it in a stunning contrast, and oriented the block to allow the bulbous underside to showcase the lightest kiss of plateau. Gorgeous work.- Daniel Bumgardner
