Alex Florov: Smooth Blowfish (Slonim)
Product Number: 002-354-0201
We've no doubt seen quite a dynamic spread of Blowfish renditions from Alex Florov. This isn't a surprise, as the carver has what most would refer to as a dynamic style, having presented us with all manner of unique, sculptural, and often slightly whimsical shape renditions. That being said, his reputation for idiosyncratic style is matched by his precise skill for bringing life to it, and every once in a while, he reminds us that skill can be applied to something a bit more traditional.
That something is this: a tightly-proportioned, very handy Slonim-grade Blowfish shape, practically cutting through the air in silhouette. And speaking of cuts, Alex's ridge-work perfectly divides birdseye from cross-grain, with the bulbous cheeks presenting a spread of vivid whorls at the left and right. The feel in hand is delightfully ergonomic, and the form as a whole is a beautiful example of Tokutomi-esque balanced asymmetry. Topping it off (so to speak), a region of lively plateau on the leftward flank of the shank's end leads the eye to a succinct, tidy saddle-stem, which Alex has lent one final ridge just down the center, complementing the faceted structure as a whole.
