Alex Florov: Smooth Discus
Product Number: 002-354-0202
A forward-inclined number seemingly inspired by the track and field event originating in ancient Greece, this Discus from Alex Florov is not lacking for uniqueness or dynamism, to be sure, but one aspect of it seems to be especially cool. We've seen all manner of examples from a number of carvers when it comes to the teardrop shank, but it seems that Alex may have fashioned the most unique I've personally seen. It's really an exercise in reduction, as Alex has here pared down the shaping cue to its essence, where it very nearly serves as the only asymmetrical cue in the entire composition. I say "nearly" because Florov managed to complement the shifted visual weight of the teardrop, simply by allowing the convex chamfered rim to ever-so-slightly list off to the right. Finished in a stunning red walnut stain, licks of electric flame frame an underside of some of the most stunning birdseye I've personally seen.- Daniel Bumgardner
