Alex Florov: Smooth Wild Cherry
Product Number: 002-354-0108
In the context of Alex Florov's body of work, the moniker of this form is something of a misnomer. Compared to his extremely imaginative Ryukin, or his Pierced Fish shape, this piece seems about as far from "wild" as one could get. Though I suppose that very juxtaposition is what sets this one apart from the carver's more curious and whimsical numbers.
In all seriousness, this Wild Cherry isn't wild at all, but the Danish Blowfish-like form is quite well-served by Alex Florov's unique and idiosyncratic approach to shaping. Rather than direct the eye immediately to the bowl in profile via the form's teardrop ridge, Alex opted to use said ridge as a liaison between two seemingly disparate forms. He rendered the shank rather broad, very nearly as much as the bowl itself, while the aforementioned ridge travels all the way to the gently chamfered rim. This results in a light impression of undulation about the rim, as well as one of the more subtle feats of asymmetry I've seen from the carver. He opted for a warmer sort of contrast, accentuating loads of lively flame and birdseye, and the stem base is oriented at a matching diagonal to the curved shank face for a bit of added visual unification. A stellar piece.- Daniel Bumgardner
