Alex Florov: Smooth Asymmetric Bent Dublin Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-354-0212
Alex Florov's portfolio is full of wildly shaped Freehands marked by dramatic asymmetry and organic flourishes. The Chicago-based artisan is among the few pipe makers who fashion pipes using primarily razor-sharp hand chisels. Such tools allow Florov to form incredibly detailed and intricate edges, his pieces often incorporating tight-knit panels and ridgelines. While this bent Dublin isn't one of his most organically inclined shapes, it nonetheless showcases Alex's creative style and expert craftsmanship.
In profile, the flaring shank end rivals the bowl in regards to visual weight, sweeping upward and outward in dramatic fashion from the curled transition. Teardrop in orientation, the shank curves into a point at the top left, creating a ridgeline that travels to the top of the shank, curving tightly through the transition and up the bowl's aft line. At the bottom, then, two other ridgelines defined the bottom of the shank before wrapping the lower bowl to accentuated the heel's slightly rounded disposition. Most notable, however, is the asymmetry Florov has incorporated when the piece is viewed from above. Unlike his other pieces that use asymmetry as a subtle accent, this design is defined by it — The shank and bowl both curve dramatically rightward, the bowl's walls canted in the same direction while the transition is positioned more to the bowl's left. Incredibly creative, it's all dressed in a vibrant contrast stain, the grain orientation beautifully in line with the shape while the plateau across the shank face offers just a hint of accenting texture.-Truett Smith
