Alex Florov: Sandblasted Fish
Product Number: 002-354-0214
When Alex Florov isn't fashioning wildly impressive, dramatically shaped Freehands, the Chicago-based carver most often leans into modern Danish designs, like the Blowfish or this Fish seen here. It's a take on an Ivarsson designs, characterized by a teardrop shank whose ridgeline curls upward into the bowl. This rendition from Florov is more elongated than past renditions we've seen — undercurve more easy and the transition less upward-flicking. The teardrop orientation of the shank points downward to the left and actually features a second ridgeline, more subtle along the right side and terminating at the transition. The other, more obvious line, then, extends expectantly into the bowl, curving all the way up to the left side of the rim, noticeably only in hand as it camouflages against the textured sandblast.
While the shaping and overall design fall within classic Danish shaping cues — soft curves and plump forms — what captures my attention most in this piece, is Alex's subtle use of asymmetry. When viewed from above, the entire piece curls ever-so-slightly leftward in the direction of the teardrop shank's "point." It's a unique touch that separates this rendition from others, and for added compositional intrigue, Florov shaped the stem base to align perfectly with the oblong orientation of the shank face. These elements all combine to accent the pipe, yet without the use of any materials outside of briar and vulcanite.-Truett Smith
