Former: Smooth Bent Egg with Horn
Product Number: 002-017-0323
With over four decades in the pipemaking business, from his time at W.Ø. Larsen to his own personal workshop, Hans "Former" Nielsen is considered one of the Danish masters, never ceasing to impress and exemplifying a willingness to pass his expertise onto a younger generation of pipemakers. Here, the venerable Dane presents a sinuous rendition of the bent Egg — and from the overall profile, strong Danish shaping cues, style of horn mount, and impeccable engineering, this bent Egg is readily recognized as Nielsen's work. Like many of his other iterations, the sweeping, consistent curve of the underside manifests itself in a forward-urging bowl, supple and rounded at the flanks as well as fore and aft. The slanted rim, then, accentuates this inherent momentum, all supported by the curling shank and stem behind. Often accenting his pieces with horn, silver, or ivorite, Former's shaping style is evident in this ferrule of horn: flaring the organic mount into a dome at the end, the negative space between stem base and horn acting the part of accent as much as does the creamy hues of the mount itself. An example of perfect grain orientation, symmetrical bands of cross grain flank the bowl, positioning whorls of birdseye all across the fore, highlighted in one of his vibrant contrast stains.-Truett Smith
