Former: Sandblasted Bent Bulldog
Product Number: 002-017-0335
While the classic form of a bent Bulldog is certainly not a design outside of Hans "Former" Nielsen's portfolio, this particular rendition employs elements we've never before seen the Danish carver utilize in this shape. Most noticeable is the piece's Horn-like profile — sinuous through the shank and stem, the transition flares into an especially forward canted bowl, imbuing the piece with a speeding dynamism. More subtle, though, is how Nielsen has extended the flanking ridgelines of the paneled shank into the heel, the hard lines protruding slightly and coming to a pointed "V" shape at the fore of the lower bowl when viewed head-on. This "V" design echoes Former's signature beadline around the bowl, which the Danish artisan renders thanks to a specific tool he designed himself that cuts the beadline into a pointed "V" orientation. A stellar, creative piece from Hans, the hard lines of the shank and about the bowl are softened slightly by the curving profile and supple sandblast, complemented handsomely by a saddle stem of cumberland.-Truett Smith
