Former: Sandblasted Apple with Silver Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-017-0339

The straight Apple is one of Hans "Former" Nielsen's signature shapes, his rusticated versions in particular being some of his most recognizable creations, and it's a design the Danish artisan can frequently be seen smoking in his workshop. While Former's renditions vary in size and have been presented in different finishes, each one showcases his expert shaping abilities and immaculate craftsmanship. The classic shape is simply elevated when interpreted through Nielsen's creative lens and readily demonstrates his six decades of pipemaking experience.

This particular piece is full of supple curves, pairing a plump bowl to a comparatively trim, abbreviated shank and a streamlined tapered stem. The bowl is positioned at a slight forward cant, subtly tapering from its chubby flanks up toward the gently inflated rim. Nielsen has finished this example in a light-depth sandblast, maintaining the shape's clean line work while also unveiling specks of birdseye across the bowl's flanks and rippling waves of cross grain fore and aft. A sterling silver mount graces the shank end, its bright tones providing some brilliant contrast between the jet-black stem and the stummel's chocolate-tinged stain. Whether you're a collector of Former's work or appreciate a classic shape crafted by a living legend, this is the kind of pipe that immediately enhances any collection it joins.
