Former: Partially Sandblasted Horn Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-017-0357

There is no discernible transition in the classic Horn shape, its shank flowing smoothly into the bowl along a flowing shape. In this example from Hans "Former" Nielsen, the carver has chosen to retain a balance of visual weight at both ends of the composition, the stem side achieving interest with a domed, smooth shank end echoed by an expansion dome at the stem base. The smooth briar balances the smooth disposition of the rim, which is gently rounded and stained, like the shank end, in a lighter tone than the sandblasted surface of the stummel.

In terms of grain, this piece presents a particular respect for the natural attributes of the briar, with the growth rings oriented to follow the arc of the stummel along its sinuous curvature and highlighting the smooth flow of the form. I particularly like the more upright posture of the bowl here; where many horns are exorbitantly forward inclined, this piece maintains a more traditional orientation. This is a pipe that lacks nothing in visual interest, design aptitude, and execution, and would elevate any collection with its creativity and handsome character.
