Former: Smooth Bent Egg Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-017-0390
Danish artisan Hans "Former" Nielsen got his start in pipe making at the age of 15, working in Poul Rasmussen's workshop before rising to prominence as the supervisor of the famed W.Ø. Larsen factory. Before long, he built his own workshop, and has now been delighting the world of pipe smoking with functional art for many decades. With over 60 years of experience, he creates exemplary pieces in demand the world over, and this supple bent Egg rendition is a fine example of both his shaping style and precise craftsmanship.
The bowl surges forward with implied momentum, flawless curvature wrapping the chamber in an uninterrupted flow of smooth briar and sublime cross grain. A glossy smooth finish no doubt does wonders to amplify the gliding, effortless aesthetic, but the shaping alone achieves a magnificent standard in that respect, every facet of the design a seamlessly functioning, perpetual-motion machine that soars even while standing still. A meticulously handcrafted vulcanite saddle stem completes the smoking instrument, with a lithe expansion ring quickly reducing to a sleek saddle configuration that bends gently down as it eases toward a svelte lip button. For a discerning appreciator of smooth pipes, this one deserves a second glance, an infinite amount of glances, really, as my eye can find no place to rest that isn't absolutely beautiful.- Joel Balyeat
