Former: Smooth Apple

Product Number: 002-017-0393

Hans "Former" Nielsen is a venerated legend in the world of pipe making, having been hard at work at his craft for over 60 years. The Danish artisan began learning beside other legends such as Sven Knudsen and Poul Rasmussen. He eventually moved on to work at W.Ø. Larsen, honing his skills and supervising other talented carvers, before striking out to make pipes that bear his own name. His style is marked by the supple curvature and soft lines that mark a great many of the pipes that come out of the Danish school of design. All of those features are easily observable in this straight Apple, a shape that Former has mastered over the years.

While we tend to see Former's Apple design in both sandblasted and rusticated finishes, this particular rendition is left smooth, dressed in a bright contrast stain that showcases the flowing flame grain on all sides of the bowl. Shape wise, the bowl is supple and softly rounded, with a plump weight in hand. It's balanced in profile by a arrow-straight shank that extends out of the low-slung transition, which features a fine bit of cheeking. The piece is topped off by a cumberland saddle stem, adding a dark tone to the warm color of the stummel. A striking, enticing piece, this pipe has all the soul and graceful craftsmanship one has come to expect from the Danish master.
