Former: Smooth Natural Bent Apple with Ivorite Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-017-0412
Bent Apples are less common from Hans "Former" Nielsen compared to their straight counterparts. Like his signature straight Apples, though, this bent version is a masterful lesson in line and curve. The beauty of this piece is in its simplicity — a common aspect of artisan-made, classically Danish pipes — and its masterful shaping is only elevated by stunning accents, remarkable grain, quality engineering, and hand-cut stem work.
Compared to Former's other Apple renditions, this example is slightly taller, bearing an almost Brandy-like persona as the walls taper upward to the rim. The base's plumpness is well matched by the stout shank, contributing a consistently muscular theme through the entire composition, and the underside of the shank curves softly through the heel and into the bowl's fore, creating an appealing and solid foundation upon which the design rests. Former doesn't accent many of his pipes with Ivorite, making this a particularly collectible offering, and it features Ivorite not only at the shank end but also the stem base. Such a motif lends the look of a spigot mount but with a standard mortise-and-tenon arrangement, and the base of the stem's accent is artfully rounded for a touch of added curvature that suits the rounded nature of the stummel. Lastly, wisps of flame grain cover the entire bowl, tapering in unison with the shaping — all highlighted in a gorgeous, natural finish that brings further definition to the grain.-Truett Smith
