Former: Smooth Cup and Saucer Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-017-0415
Prior supervisor of the prestigious W.Ø. Larsen workshop and manager of Bentley pipes in Switzerland and Germany, Hans "Former" Nielsen has been crafting pipes for over sixty year, including his own handmade work available today. His pipes are among the most collected and renowned in the world, and he's as much a capable machinist and craftsman as he is a discerning artist: His pipes are the pinnacle of engineering and quality, and his shaping style adheres to artisan renditions of timeless designs. Former's portfolio comprises countless Apple and Billiard designs, among other classics, and such a dedication to more reserved and classic shapes makes this Cup and Saucer rendition a standout.
Compared to other artisan's work, this Cup and Saucer isn't especially avant-garde; however, it's a rarity from Former and one of his few-and-far-between Freehands. At its foundation, though, this piece preserves the Danish carver's fondness for the Apple shape: The bowl is a plump and rounded form covered in a consistent band of vertical grain, but as the Cup and Saucer shape demands, it's pertly balanced atop the shank rather than at the end of it — the heel marked by the shank's continuation for a distinct, cradled posture. Said shank expands in its arch away from the bowl, and for an artful touch of compositional coherence, Former has continued the shank's lines through the base of the stem, flicking upward in dramatic fashion and mirroring the heel's curving ridges.-Truett Smith
