Former: Smooth Acorn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-017-0421
Former supervisor of the prestigious W.Ø. Larsen workshop and manager of Bentley pipes in Switzerland and Germany, Hans "Former" Nielsen has been crafting pipes for over sixty year, including his own handmade work available today. His pipes are among the most collected and renowned in the world, and he's as much a capable machinist and craftsman as he is a discerning artist: His pipes are the pinnacle of engineering and quality, and his shaping style adheres to artisan renditions of timeless designs. Former's portfolio comprises countless Apple and Billiard designs, among other classics, and while the Acorn isn't the most ubiquitous shape from the Danish carver, this example exhibits the clean, refined, and elegant style for which he's known.
A compact pipe overall, this Acorn is made all the more convenient and comfortable thanks to it's balanced bend and distributed weight. The bowl flares gracefully toward a rounded rim, adhering to the design's characteristic form, and the inner rim is neatly chamfered for an accenting dose of crispness that matches the angled heel and half-saddle stem. From this heel, the shank curls gracefully upward in line with the briar's grain, and the choice for a half-saddle stem does well to maintain the undercurve's arc through the stem, while still balancing the aforementioned heel and inner rim. Primed for smoking comfort, the stem is hand-cut from vulcanite, and the stummel wears a vibrant contrast stain that maximizes the flame grain across the bowl, flaring in tandem with the silhouette's lines.-Truett Smith
