About This Pipe
Hans "Former" Nielsen is a master pipe maker with decades of experience and a reputation for both signature designs and imaginative reinterpretations of classic shapes. He began his journey at just 15, repairing pipes in Poul Rasmussen's Copenhagen workshop, and later rose to a supervisory role at the legendary W.Ø. Larsen. Eventually, Nielsen struck out on his own, launching an artisan career that has since earned him international acclaim. Today, his pipes are prized by collectors around the world for their refined craftsmanship and timeless style.
Former's Apple design is an iconic profile in the world of artisan pipe making, celebrated for its understated elegance, embodying the clarity, balance, and precision that defines Fromer's decades-long legacy in pipe making. This particular piece stands as a prime example of his mature style — a compact, thoughtfully composed design that radiates quiet sophistication. The rounded bowl, perched on a soft heel, rises with graceful curvature to a gently inflated, chamfered rim. A wide, subtly cheeked transition flows into a low-slung shank, which carries the composition's plump proportions through the aft of the profile. Continuing the composition's clean lines, the shoulders of the vulcanite saddle stem are softly rounded, which keeps the profile balanced and concise before the stem tapers to the bit. The stummel's warm, smooth finish highlights a stunning interplay of flame grain along the flanks and dense birdseye across the underside.
Former Apple designs are rightly celebrated as signatures in his portfolio — not for being showy, but for their flawless proportion, engineering, and the way they quietly embody the refinement of Danish artisan pipe making.
