Frank Axmacher: Sandblasted Wideshank Freehand
Product Number: 002-815-0005
From above, these wide-shanked freehand designs from Frank Axmacher are impressive for their breadth, the shank coming almost as wide as the bowl itself. In profile, however, the low-slung line of the shank is lithe and serpentine, while the transition of the piece gives an extra sense of plumpness to the bowl, drawing the eye to the concave curve at the rim. The finish, too, lends itself to the cohesive organicism of the piece — a crisp, low-profile sandblast that displays some the briar's underlying growth rings, neatly stacked from base to rim, all dressed in a jet-black stain that helps preserve the interest on the shape alone. Quite the elegant piece.- Rachel DuBose
