Frank Axmacher: Sandblasted Billiard

Product Number: 002-815-0008

While Frank Axmacher is renowned for his playful, daring Freehand designs, the German carver can also effortlessly craft a beautiful shape chart standard as evidenced by this Billiard. The tall, upright bowl garners much of the piece's visual focus by being paired to a comparatively trim, gradually tapering oval shank and lengthy vulcanite mouthpiece. I also notably detect some Danish influence in the bowl's execution as evidenced by the gently inflated rim, lifting heel, and the subtle cheeking around the transition. And while I was immediately impressed with the shaping and superb all around craftsmanship, I must admit that the sandblast is what really sealed the deal for me. Frank has treated the stummel to a remarkably crisp sandblast, unveiling countless waves of rippling ring grain that creep up the bowl and are so well-defined they easily stand out underneath the jet-black stain. Whether you've yet to be introduced to an Axmacher pipe or are seeking to add another one to your collection, this piece demonstrates the German carver's versatility and would be an ideal choice for those who desire a more straightforward, classically inclined shape.
