Frank Axmacher: Smooth Apple with Bamboo
Product Number: 002-815-0015
Despite forgoing a sense of overt asymmetry, as far as shaping goes, there is an inherent organic dynamism to this Apple shape from Frank Axmacher. The German carver certainly has a penchant for drawing inspiration from the characteristically natural-esque Danish school, as well as his own history as a sculptor and stonemason. Judging by the supremely balanced, artful approach to shaping on display here, I'd say his inspiration is well-utilized.
Juxtaposing a proportionally plump Apple bowl with a slender, carefully curved stretch of bamboo shank, along with a lengthier downturned saddle stem, Frank's managed to render something simultaneously comforting and lithe. The pronounced curve at the rim, while reinforcing its soft, Danish disposition, also serves to echo the sense of curve initiated at the more architectural stem base, though the carver did well to complement the bamboo's natural rhythm with divots to the left and right, near the stem-shank junction. Coupled with that, the tenon is also fashioned from surgical stainless for added reinforcement to the shank. Finished in a warm, vibrant contrast to accentuate some splendid grain courtesy of a diagonally-oriented cross-cut pattern, this is a piece I could see cheerfully adding to my collection in a heartbeat.- Daniel Bumgardner
