Gabriele: Smooth Bent Apple (Whale)
Product Number: 002-533-0104
Broad and low slung, and though it maintains a short length, this Apple from Gabriele showcases the artist's penchant for rounded and plump designs. Pinched at the transition from bowl to shank, it expands in all directions from that central point. The shank flares dramatically outward toward the stem with a flattened portion at the bottom, and a symmetrical curve defining the sides and top of the shank. A crisp ridge line follows it along the bottom to the transition, where it smooths and becomes part of the rounded underside of the bowl. The bowl itself is pleasantly rounded in Apple-esque form, and sports quite good grain for this shape. The contrast stain does its work of highlighting that grain, revealing all the fine strands and dark striations one would expect at this level of pipemaking. The pipe sits, too, the rocking sort of sitter that is pretty tough to knock over. Practical, beautiful and made by one of the most respected artisans in the pipe world, this piece is ready to enhance your rotation.- Chuck Stanion
