Gabriele: Sandblasted Tomato with Masur Birch (Turtle)
Product Number: 002-533-0114
From shape to finish to use of materials, this Tomato is readily recognized as the beautiful work of Gabriele dal Fiume. Though Italian and well-versed in the Italian school of shaping, Gabriele's personal style hews closer to the Danish tradition, to which this particular piece testifies. Shape-wise, it's a plump, compact, low-slung take on the classic Tomato, the bulging waistline filling the hand while remaining quite squat in profile. Contrasting its hearty form, though, is an inherent sense of forward momentum realized through the forward-inclined bowl, upward-flicking shank, and downturned stem. It lends the profile an active, dynamic stance that balances out the muscular proportions. Regarding the finish and use of materials, this piece is classic Gabriele — dressed in a vivid, Bengal-striped contrast stain, the visual texture of the sandblast transitions into the ink-swirled grain of the masur birch before, then, adding yet another visual pattern via the warm, striated hues of the cumberland stem. A lesson in visual texture, this piece has it all yet remains well-balanced and consistent as a whole — not an easy feat yet very well done by Gabriele.-Truett Smith
