Gabriele: Sandblasted Acorn with Bamboo (Turtle)
Product Number: 002-533-0115
Though certainly not Churchwarden length, this Gabriele Acorn is one of the longer pieces we've received from the Italian carver and features the most knuckles of bamboo of any other piece. Slightly upward of curve, the six slender knuckles taper subtly toward the transition, enhancing the lines' flow and accentuating the bowl's poised, perched posture. As such, the high-waisted, flaring bowl seems to grow from out the bamboo, lending the piece a striking sense of organicism in tandem with the use of bamboo. The heel is softly rounded to continue the rhythm of the bamboo knuckles, interrupting the profile in a steady, tiered-like fashion.
Gabriele has done exceptionally to marry the bamboo to the stem and stummel, fitting the shank end with a ferrule of cumberland to match the mouthpiece while the briar at the transition seamlessly fits to the bamboo and even continues the texture of a small, natural divot in the organic material. The bowl feels sublime in hand thanks to its bulbous shaping and crisp, sandblasted finish, the rim wavy and undulating to increase the organic appeal of the form as a whole. The combination of bamboo, cumberland, and Bengal contrast stain is a signature of Gabriele's, making this a fine representation of the artisan's work but rendered in a longer, more slender form than his typically compact and muscular fare.-Truett Smith
