Gabriele: Sandblasted Bent Egg (Turtle)

Product Number: 002-533-0122

While Gabriele Dal Fiume's pipemaking style often reflects his appreciation for organic forms and nature, the bent Egg is a shape we rarely see from the Italian artisan compared to his Acorn and Tomato designs. This particular piece is a remarkably gestural bent Egg and is one of the more overtly Danish-inspired designs I've seen from Gabriele. It's especially evident in the bowl's supple curves, the smooth line work, and the subtle cheeking displayed around the transition. The slanted rim is neatly chamfered and comes to a slight point along the fore, giving the bowl its implied forward-urging momentum in profile. Along with its shaping and gestural stance, one of my favorite aspects about this piece is the finish and color palette. The sandblast has brought out specks of birdseye along the lifted heel and waves of grain that traverse the bowl's flanks. It's then dressed in one of Gabriele's signature smoldering contrast stains, with the shank's pale hardwood accent providing some tasteful contrast before the elegantly downturned cumberland stem continues the dark hues established by the stummel.
