Gabriele: Sandblasted Apple with Masur Birch (Turtle) Tobacco Pipe

Gabriele dal Fiume is an Italian pipe maker, though his sensibilities seem to fuse certain aspects of both the Italian and Danish schools, resulting in pipes that are equal parts supple and plump. Such is the case with this bent Apple, which boasts a curvaceous outline and a fluid undercurve, the latter sweeping from the bowl's fore to the stem's button. Up front, the muscular bowl rests atop a wide heel and grows thick walls that taper to a concave rim. An angled transition follows the bowl and marks the start of a vaulted shank punctuated by a bright accent of masur birch. The hardwood accent lends a touch of warmth to the shape's otherwise dusky palette, its flared face additionally mirroring the base of the saddle stem that follows. The stummel is dressed in a crisp, earthy sandblast that highlights rippling growth rings across the bowl and shank alike.
