Geiger: Sandblasted Calabash with Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-564-0048
For a detailed look into the creative process engineering talent of Sara Mossberg and Love Geiger, check out Shane Ireland's and my All Pipes Considered video. The Swedish couple fashions some of the highest-grade pipes in the industry, both Sara and Love involved in the pipemaking process of each piece from design to shaping and finishing for a truly collaborative and highly innovative approach. Here, the duo present this stunning Calabash, and while we've received numerous reverse Calabashes from Geiger, this is the first traditional Calabash we've seen from them, boldly displaying the iconic, sweeping profile of the classic gourd design. Fashioned from briar, the bowl flares dramatically from out of the curling transition, forward-urging for an inherent sense of dynamic momentum. It's replete with a gorgeous cap made from stabilized mammoth with a briar chamber set within. While the stummel is dark-stained and Danish of style in its low-profile texture, the mammoth is contradistinctively extroverted, its pale cream and icy blue hues standing in stark contrast and the innermost rim stained in a vivid, mahogany stain and studded in birdseye. This same contrast stain, then, is utilized along the top of the bowl underneath the cap, testifying to Geiger's expert attention to detail even toward features that aren't immediately visible. No stone is left unturned, and this piece lacks in nothing, defined by stellar craftsmanship, use of materials, and beautiful aesthetics.
