Geiger: Smooth Rolling Egg

Product Number: 002-564-0049

Complex curves dominate this piece from Sara Mossberg and Love Geiger. The bowl is an elongated oval along the same axis as the shank, and it rolls downward from the rim into the upward arcing underside of the shank, which extends forward almost the length of the stummel, terminating mid-bowl on the far side. It's almost as though the bowl were perched upon the shank, but the organicism of the shape dissuades that interpretation, the bowl curving into the shank element along the flanks and far side. The shank extends along its upper side with an almost spiraling effect, meeting a crisp ridgeline at the contoured shank end in a seeming asymmetrical way, yet simultaneously maintaining overall symmetry. Yes, that's a contradiction, but it's part of the optical illusion of this piece. The shank-end drifts organically into the underside of the piece with firm ridgelines along each flank, culminating its curved paneling on the far side of the bowl and twisting slightly as it does so. This composition is as interesting when viewing the underside as it is in profile or from above. Every visual angle reveals something new and different. At just over five inches, it's a compact form for so many complex elements, but it's beautifully successful, comfortable in hand, and remarkably creative in its execution
