Geiger: Smooth Reverse Calabash Nautical Horn
Product Number: 002-564-0057
Sara Mossberg and Love Geiger often fashion artisan pipes that combine classic design cues with more organic flourishes and asymmetry. The Swedish duo's signature Nautical Horn design, seen here, is an excellent example of that aforementioned combination of styles. The form is marked by a fairly standard Dublin/Horn bowl, fitted to a bulbous shank via a tight transition, all paired to a crisp, upward-shooting stem.
While the shape is naturally rather compact and tight-knit, this rendition is especially so, thanks to the bowl's squat nature — the shank rising as tall as the rim. Underneath, the piece is founded upon a rounded ridgeline running from shank end to the rim's fore before connecting with the second ridgeline that separates the rim from the bowl. Said rim here is wavy and undulating, tilted slightly on its vertical axis for a subtle touch of asymmetry.
The crisp lines of the bowl, then, are contrasted by the voluptuous shaping of the shank. The shape is more than merely aesthetically appealing, however, as it houses the expansive cooling chamber of the reverse Calabash design — a form that Sara and Love have mastered over the years. What impresses me most about this piece, though, is the rounded wedding band of brass surrounding the mortise. Instead of being inset, it's slightly raised and perfectly matches the curving contours of the shank, allowing the mount-style stem to fit perfectly flush and complete the shank's implied lines.-Truett Smith
