Peter Heding: Sandblasted Nut with Boxwood (Gold)

Product Number: 002-362-0161

When this benevolent behemoth showed up at my desk, it was titled as a "Giant'. I can't recall seeing that adjective used in Peter's Grading system, it is not stamped as such on the pipe, and I'm certain that he hasn't created a unique series of large pipes, so I scratched it from the title. That out of the way (my inner pedant be dammed), this is one BIG briar.

Prior to the arrival of this Gold Grade, sandblasted bent Acorn, the longest Heding pipe that has appeared on our site was a Diamond Grade Lion (with bamboo), which snapped the tape at exactly seven and a quarter inches. This study in elongated elegance stretches to nearly eight and three-quarter inches, and every millimeter (if you will forgive the mixing of metric/US customary) is festooned with delightful grain. To my way of thinking, the most compelling attribute of this Acorn is Peter's adroit balancing of length and proportion; the perfect taper of the shank as it travels from mount to bowl, the improbably perfect execution of the latter, and equally impeccable symbiosis that is created in the pairing. Dr. Heding has, almost from his very start, held a place in my heart as one of the most intriguing carvers in the game. Pipes such as this confirm that there's zero chance of my regard changing anytime soon.
