Peter Heding: Smooth Cobra (Gold)
Product Number: 002-362-0208
The Cobra is a shape you might compare to the Rhodesian. By that, I mean there are a couple of key features that define it, but beyond that you can find wildly different designs still wearing the same name — in the Rhodesian's case often all you need is a not-diamond shank and one or two bead-lines somewhere on the bowl. At its most basic, the Cobra is usually a modified bent Egg, made broad and flat from shank through transition, though you'll see just as many by the better-known artisans that are clearly taking cues from various (otherwise unrelated) Bo Nordh shapes.
Fittingly, the last time we saw a Peter Heding Cobra (which was six years ago) it was completely different. I guess one way to describe that one would be as a hybrid of classic Horn and turned-around Bo Nordh Sphinx. This time around the composition is clearly more upright, and though you might see a little bit of rearranged Nordh Ramses in the play between the paneled nature of the broad shank and the rounded forward and rear faces, overall this one strikes me as much more "Heding." Ironically one of the features that makes it so, that particular style of bifurcated stem-base that serves as a continuation of the shank's sweep, is also a common component to Peter's own direct renditions of certain Bo Nordh shapes — namely the Sphinx and, yes, the Ramses.
