When you think of Peter Heding's body of work, it's likely his range of evocative, biologically inspired freehands that first comes to mind. While those more sculptural pieces are certainly impressive in their own right, he's just as precise and skilled in his execution of minimalist, Danish classic and neo-classic forms as well. This straight Billiard, for example, is just beautiful from end to end. The broad, low-set waistline and soft taper up to the rim are classic Danish cues, but he's bumped up the proportions of the entire piece to make for a charmingly chubby and muscular rendition overall — one offering a firm, resolute presence in hand and promising a subtle warmth when smoked. By keeping the shaping fairly conservative, Peter's also shifted more visual focus to the block's natural grain pattern — which here happens to be one of extremely dense flame and straight grain, brought out by an electric, high-contrast stain and accented only by a thin wafer of pale boxwood. Gorgeous example of Heding's gem of a Diamond grade.
