Peter Heding: Smooth Tomato with Horn (Gold)
Product Number: 002-362-0228
In the Tomato family of shapes, many pipe makers tend to emphasize breadth as the defining characteristic of their renditions, stretching out the cross-section to create plump cheeks of sorts along either flank. Here, however, Peter Heding seems to have gone the opposite direction, stretching out the bowl from fore to aft while keeping the flanks fairly low-profile — resulting in an oval shaped bowl when viewed from above. Surprisingly, this elongation actually makes for a more comfortable grip in hand, with its pronounced, plump curves fitting more naturally to the contours of the palm. Moreover, stretching out the bowl in this way also works to emphasize the sense of flow and direction Peter's already established in the silhouette, highlighting the piece's implied forward momentum in profile. Of course, there's much more to enjoy about this briar than the shaping alone; it's also earned Peter's prestigious "Gold" grade, a designation you can immediately appreciate simply by glancing at this piece's gorgeous flame grain pattern. Beautiful work.
