Peter Heding: Smooth Disc with Horn
Product Number: 002-362-0244
Low-slung and broad of waistline, this Disc from Peter Heding most closely resembles the Danish artisan's Tomato and Tadpole renditions, what with the squat bowl and bulbous profile. In this piece, he's really sped up the design's inherent momentum, particularly in how the shank flicks upward out of the transition, balanced out, then, by the stem's slight downward turn. Such a feature thrusts the form's lines into the bowl's defined waist, which has been off-set in relation to the canted rim to accentuate the dynamic profile.
With this flowing dynamism, Peter has added a whimsical, Freehand-like touch at the rim. Softly tapered and raised, the lines to the rim add an extra curve in silhouette. Though subtle, it's readily apparent in profile and gives the form a slight Art Deco aesthetic, contrasting the otherwise organic and soft, Danish-lined style. It's dressed here in a low-profile contrast stain, and Heding has positioned the flame grain perfectly around the bowl, leaving birdseye all along the underside. At the shank-end, the horn accent is of the darker variety, flaring suddenly toward the end to echo the saddle stem's base. Lovely work.-Truett Smith
