Peter Heding: Smooth Blowfish with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-362-0245
The Blowfish is a name that describes two very distinct types of shapes, both with their roots in the Danish school. The more common one is the crisp-lined, Japanese-influenced style, with its framed flanks of birdseye and long line of cross-grain, a marvel of linework when executed well. The other has more in common with this rendition from Peter Heding — a plump bent Apple for the bowl, with some crisp, flaring "fins" on its shank, creating a dynamic piece that also shows off excellent grain (flame, in this case), but feels more in line with the Danish modern style of shaping. Indeed, here Peter Heding's ability to structure a piece is on display, the linework almost invisible in profile, and the shape of the pipe as a whole utterly comfortable in hand, with a fine balance. That precision shaping is on display in the use of boxwood to accent, as well, its lines perfectly matching those of the shank, with an easy bevel leading quite naturally to the stem base, helping to guide the eye along the form naturally.- Rachel DuBose
