Peter Heding: Smooth Disc with Horn
Product Number: 002-362-0256
Squat and broad-splayed of waistline, this Disc from Peter Heding likens itself to a plump Tomato with a jaunty, Freehand-esque touch to it. Said whimsicality is most apparent at the rim, which has been raised and canted forward in relation to the bowl's protruding waist. The tapered and cinched nature of the rim adds an extra curve to the already flowing profile, accentuating the piece's forward-rushing momentum. Rendered in a rather compact length overall (barely over five inches) the smaller size emphasizes Peter's playful shaping here, while the Danish-style contrast stain brings out a well-oriented, equatorial band of cross grain and the underlying forest of birdseye beneath. The horn accent at the shank-end adds some dark and creamy hues to the color palette, while its sudden flare transitions well into the saddle stem, making for a fine use of negative space and staying true to many a Danish carver's convention of flaring the shank-end.-Truett Smith
