Peter Heding: Smooth Volcano
Product Number: 002-362-0260
Peter Heding's Volcano renditions are typically quite flowing of form and tall of bowl. This piece here sacrifices the latter for even more of the former — the more squat, tapered bowl urges the sweeping lines of the stem and shank forward, rather than upward into the height of the bowl. With a gentle transition that flows seamlessly from the top of the shank into the aft-most line of the bowl, the shank curls dramatically, flaring toward the end. Crisp ridgelines, then, flow down the flanks to wrap the base of the bowl, separating it from the inflated heel below. Despite the underside's rounded form, this piece sits upright, able to rock gently but without any fear of tipping over. Lastly, Heding has dressed it in one of his vibrant contrast stains, vividly highlighting wispy tongues of flame grain around the bowl and whorls of birdseye populating the heel.-Truett Smith
