Peter Heding: Smooth Bent Brandy with Boxwood
Product Number: 002-362-0273
Peter Heding's shaping style leans heavily toward Danish aesthetics, and Heding often pays homage to iconic carvers who helped pave the way before him. This particular bent Brandy celebrates shaping cues associated with the late Lars Ivarsson, namely, the shaping of the shank. Such an extended, yet also muscular shank was a common motif in Lars' work — the lines of the shank often continued through a domed stem base, which Heding has also emulated here. Despite the shank's robustness, Peter's shaping executions renders the profile elegant and softly sinuous, leading into a rounded Brandy bowl. The heel lifts considerably at the fore, adding dynamism to the undercurve and making the bowl more slender, almost Egg-like. Heding's consideration of the briar's natural grain pattern is evident here across the stummel, and his choice to elongate the shank is apt for showing off the consistent band of vertical grain running down its flanks. That grain, then, wraps the bowl in stunning, tight-knit fashion, poising birdseye above and below and having been brought out by a vivid contrast stain, whose lighter hues complement the boxwood accent ring around the shank end.-Truett Smith
