Peter Heding: Smooth Fish
Product Number: 002-362-0274
People abandon all sorts of careers when pipe making attracts them to the craft. Dr. Peter Heding was a molecular biologist when he realized he was really a pipe maker more at home with tools and sandpaper than with microscopes and research. He was first influenced by a television interview with Anne Julie in 2003, and he bought his first pipes from Tom Eltang, so his start was at an elevated level. He spent two years with Eltang to learn carving, and the pipes he's been crafting since he started his own brand in 2006 certainly reflect that tier of craftsmanship.
As evidence of that statement, this Fish projects the astonishing skills required of its design and execution. The prominently rounded bowl maintains its shape at the transition with dramatic cheeking, curving down to the heel, which is forward lifting. Of particular interest is the forward curve of the bowl, which meets a subtle forward lip at the rim, offering forward momentum in its leading edge. That lip is counterbalanced at the stem base, which is offset, its upper section angled toward its lower section. The shank is long with upward curvature, helping the composition maintain a vertically compressed attitude.
The stain is a fiery, crimson-toned hue, providing stunning visual emphasis in contrast to the jet-black stem. In cross-grain orientation, the grain emphasizes its birdseye on its left and right flanks, and handsome horizontal grain fore and aft, as well as along the upper and lower shank and at the heel. The piece is just under six-and-a-quarter inches in length, offering a convenient size in a design that appears large. It's a stunning design precisely executed and expertly finished, and is a testament to Heding's own skills as well as the influence of the great pipe makers who motivated him to pursue a craft that he was clearly born to follow.- Chuck Stanion
