Peter Heding: Smooth Elephant's Foot with Horn

Product Number: 002-362-0275

The Elephant's Foot and Peter Heding's execution of the Pickaxe share several design elements in common. Most notably the panels flanking the bowl and the heel's extension below the transition. The Elephant's Foot, seen here, offers a more rounded posture, though, the fore and aft portions of the bowl curving outward, rather than fashioned to panels themselves, as Heding often does with his Pickaxe. The resulting aesthetic is a more organically inclined one, personified in this piece and accentuated by the graceful transition, lithe S-curve, and elegant horn accent.

It's a smaller iteration of the timeless Bo Nordh shape compared to the majority I've seen, personally — offering a comfortable hands-free smoking posture and is conveniently sized for traveling. And Peter has shaped it expertly to showcase the characteristic grain of the design: Cross grain stacks up along the side panels, while seas of birdseye comprise the front and back. Full of class and poise, the beautiful grain is highlighted in a tasteful contrast stain, and the compositional balance between the horn accent's flare and the stem's expansion ring is subtle yet handsomely effective.
