Peter Heding: Smooth Tadpole (Diamond)

Product Number: 002-362-0276

Peter Heding, Ph.D., was a molecular biologist in 2003 when he became entranced by the wonder of briar pipe carving, thanks in large part to time he spent with Tom Eltang, and it was at Tom's workshop that he spent two years learning the intricacies of hand-carved pipes. Clearly, he was inspired, and clearly, that investment in learning another profession was worthwhile to the pipe smoking community as a whole. We need no more than the Tadpole pictured here to confirm those facts.

With elegant forward momentum, it leans to the fore with a dome-like forward flank peppered with tight birdseye and distinguished from the bowl by the two ridgelines running vertically along the left and right. The transition's curvature renders it almost nonexistent as the briar flows gently from bowl to shank, which is tapered toward the stem. That stem continues the taper to the lip button and an impression of a Tadpole's tail. The rim is slightly scalloped for additional visual interest and to imply a continuation of the bowl's upward curves. Particularly prominent is the heel, which presents a sharp spur beneath the transition, from which the undercurve of the shank extends demurely to the stem, unifying its profile elements in a presentation of breathtaking craftsmanship.
